Welcome to my little piece of the internet. My name is Hillery and I am a 25-year-old small business owner, crafter, baker, writer, and wife. I grew up in a small town in north Georgia, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. When I was sixteen my family moved south on Hwy 27 to another little town where I met the love of my life, James a super cool Canadian. A year and a half later I moved back to my old high school upstate to graduate.
As a child I loved to draw, cut out homemade paper dolls, sew clothes for my baby dolls, and make match box furniture. My Gran taught me to sew at a young age and I have played with string ever since. I love to sew by hand and with my machine and embroidery is kind of my weakness. I’ll show you my collection sometime.
In 2007 I moved to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada with my love, to attend university for english and philosophy. I lived in the dorms and covered all my walls with newspaper and cut outs from art magazines with scrapbook tape. Everyone thought I was weird and crazy.
In 2009 James and I moved back to Georgia to be close to my parents and that summer I started selling feathered headbands and clips at the Roller Derby bouts in Atlanta where I fell in love with craft booths.
After nearly two years of selling off an on at various craft fairs my older brother, told me it was time to get serious and Clever Plumage, my tiny craft business, was born in August 2011. This was one of the biggest small steps I have ever taken. Every month I take a few more, though it will be years before I get used to it all.
My love and I now live in Kingston, Ontario and we were married here in March 2011. This is the town that he grew up in and it is absolutely wonderful. It’s on the lake, it’s historic, and it seems to have a little craft scene of it’s own.
Through out my journey my family and my husband’s family have been so wonderful in supporting me and my craft adventures. I truly cannot thank them enough for always being there and encouraging me along the way. I love my family and I am so lucky to have them.
I am so incredibly lucky to have my husband in my life. James is amazing. I don’t know where I would be without him. He’s a genius, loves to tell corny jokes, and is incredibly supportive of all I do. I love him with every last bit of my heart. We love to go on walks pretending to be sight seers, eat yummy foods at cool hole in the wall restaurants, read books, play board games, live thrifty, and run away to the beach whenever we can.
I suppose that’s me in a nut shell, or maybe on the half shell. Here is some adorableness of James and I from our engagement shoot winter 2011 with Steacy Michaud.
